The CheMatSustain Database: Digital Driver of Sustainable Materials Research

The CheMatSustain Database: Digital Driver of Sustainable Materials Research

The CheMatSustain (CMS) Database is a central platform for collecting, organizing, and exploiting research data generated within the project. Experimental results from the Work Packages (WPs) are curated, stored, and made accessible as structured, usable datasets.

Purpose of the Database

The CMS Database enables the systematic storage and visualization of experimental outcomes. It supports further data exploitation, such as developing in silico (QSAR) models to predict material safety and to assist in risk assessment during the design phase. The curated data also contribute to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the Footprint Scorecard (FS), and public dissemination through the CMS Facility — a platform tailored for policymakers, industry, and citizens. Discover the database on here: here.

System Architecture

The CMS is built on a PostgreSQL relational database and follows a Docker-based deployment to ensure portability and reproducibility. Role-based access control is implemented, with an administrative back office for user and test management.

The backend, developed with FastAPI (Python), handles data processing and API endpoints. It includes dedicated parsers for various experimental data types, ensuring consistent extraction and transformation workflows.

The frontend is built with Next.js and TypeScript, following a component-based architecture. Data visualization uses Recharts, and user authentication is managed through a role-based AuthContext. The interface, styled with Tailwind CSS, provides dedicated data viewers for each experiment, including specialized visualizations and downloadable reports.

Data Management and FAIR Compliance

The CMS Database is designed in accordance with the FAIR principles — ensuring data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. All developed code is open-source and available on GitHub. The database is hosted on an IONOS VPS server located in Germany.

CheMatSustain Facility Launch

CheMatSustain Facility Launch

Our consortium is excited to announce our first national event taking place in Bologna, Italy on 27th of June 2025. The National Event will be a public event open to researchers, industrial professionals, policymakers and all stakeholders interested in enhancing the safety and sustainability of chemicals and nanomaterials through innovation. This event is dedicated to exploiting pathways to bridging the gap from science to policy, industry and the general public. Specifically, scientific sessions will be alternated with roundtable discussions to bring multiple perspectives and embrace transdisciplinary knowledge exchange. The event will also mark the official launch of the CheMatSustain Facility, and is organized in a Hybrid setting to make the event accessible to all interested stakeholders. The in-person session will take place in Bologna, Italy. All details about participation will be provided after registration. The facility is an open-access platform, designed to serve three main stakeholder groups—policymakers, industry leaders, and the general public—with targeted resources and support.

For policymakers, the platform provides essential support in developing a clear regulatory framework and offers guidance on safety and sustainability standards, enabling informed decision-making and policy development. Industry leaders will benefit from resources that facilitate the scale-up of safe and sustainable production methods for specific chemicals and nanomaterials, helping them to align with emerging safety regulations and sustainability goals.

Additionally, the platform offers robust methodologies for assessing the toxicological and ecotoxicological properties of nanoparticles. This includes comprehensive data on their absorption within the body, accumulation in tissues and organs, transport characteristics, exposure levels, dose/response information, and their distribution and persistence in the environment.

For citizens, the platform serves as an accessible, science-based resource to better understand chemical exposure and its implications for daily life, providing clear, reliable information to support public health and safety awareness.

Do not miss the opportunity to engage with the latest advancements in the field.

CheMatSustain Facility – Join Our Co-Design Workshop!

CheMatSustain Facility – Join Our Co-Design Workshop!

Nanomaterials (NMs) are driving innovation across various industries, including healthcare, energy, manufacturing, and consumer products. However, ensuring their safe and sustainable use requires collaboration between scientific research, industry, policy, and society. This workshop aims to bring together key stakeholders to discuss challenges, validate solutions, and foster collaboration for the responsible development and use of nanomaterials.

The workshop is designed for industry professionals looking for tools to integrate safe and sustainable nanomaterials, policymakers ensuring compliance with evolving regulations, researchers and scientists advancing safety and sustainability, and citizen groups and NGOs advocating for transparency and public trust in nanomaterial applications.

Discussions will focus on identifying key stakeholder needs, addressing challenges from industry, policy, research, and societal perspectives. Participants will contribute to validating the structure, functionalities, and accessibility of the CheMatSustain Facility, a platform designed to serve as a knowledge hub and decision-support tool. The workshop will also encourage collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and citizens to ensure the platform effectively meets diverse needs.

By joining this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to influence the future of nanomaterials by shaping a platform that aligns with sector-specific requirements. They will engage with key stakeholders across different fields, fostering meaningful connections and contributing to practical solutions that support risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and industry adoption. The discussions will be interactive, featuring live digital collaboration, allowing participants to share their perspectives, define key priorities, and shape the platform’s essential features.

The workshop will be held online on the 28th of March (10:00-11:30 CET) and is free of charge. It is organized by the CheMatSustain Consortium, for more information and registration, please follow the link: Register Here. We look forward to your participation.
