BIOTRANSFORM 2nd working group: Tools and methodologies for the regional transition to circular bioeconomy

BIOTRANSFORM 2nd working group: Tools and methodologies for the regional transition to circular bioeconomy

The BIOTRANSFORM project is organising its 2nd online working group “Tools and methodologies for the regional transition to circular bioeconomy” on 29 April from 14:00 to 15:30. The objective of this meeting is to present to regional authorities the methodologies and tools developed by the BIOTRANSFORM project and to collect their feedback to ensure they meet their actual needs.

This interactive online session will be a useful feedback moment for the BIOTRANSFORM project and will allow further improvement of current methodologies and tools under development:

  • Impact Assessment Tool (IAT): developed by Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), this tool compiles environmental, economic, and social indicators (e.g., global warming potential, job creation, impact on vulnerable groups) to assess the implications of chosen transition pathways on regions overall sustainability. It identifies optimal bio-economy scenarios by evaluating indicator values and aligning with regional sustainability goals, empowering policymakers with valuable insights to drive comprehensive circular bio-economy initiatives.
  • Methodology to co-define and co-implement optimal transition pathways: developed by Alchemia Nova, this methodology involves local and regional stakeholders to co-evaluate several regional pathways to transition to circular bioeconomy, and to select the final and optimal one that is uniquely adapted to the regional context. The aim is to ensure an inclusive and comprehensive approach to co-defining optimal transition pathways with regional actors, focusing on stakeholder engagement, data-driven analysis, and collaborative solution development.
  • Financing solutions for the transition to circular bioeconomy: once the optimal regional transition pathway is selected, suitable funding and financial solutions are needed to implement the transition. ACR+ is currently reviewing existing financing tools and schemes for circular bioeconomy (including grants, funds and investments) which regions could rely upon to implement the said pathway in their territory.

Practical details

BIOTRANSFORM – Circular BIOeconomy TRANSFORMation for regions by enabling resource and governance networks – is a three-year project which aims to provide European policymakers with an adequate assessment and policy development framework, knowledge base and expert support ecosystem to accelerate the transition from linear fossil-based systems to circular bio- based systems.

BIOTRANSFORM | 1st working group: Governance and financing challenges for circular bioeconomy

BIOTRANSFORM | 1st working group: Governance and financing challenges for circular bioeconomy

Join us at the inaugural working group session of BIOTRANSFORM project, focusing on the theme of “Governance and financing challenges for circular bioeconomy.” This online session will be held on 10 October 2023, from 14:00 to 16:00 CEST. The objective of this meeting is to explore and gain deeper insights into the governance and financial obstacles confronting governmental bodies as they navigate the transition towards circular bio-based systems.

As a representative of a public authority, your active participation in this focus group will enable you to make your voice heard and identify, discuss, consolidate, and prioritise the identified barriers with other public actors. You will also hear more about the specific regions and bioeconomy value chains that will be investigated over the course of the project. This interactive session will be the first step into the creation of technical transition guidelines for public authorities, listing effective governance and financing instruments to transition to a circular bio-based system.

If you are eager to contribute your valuable insights to the work of BIOTRANSFORM and would like to learn more about the experiences of other regions in the field of bioeconomy, we kindly request that you complete the registration form by 3 October.

The Biocirculacities Trilogy – Episode 3: The journey of the three pilot territories

The Biocirculacities Trilogy – Episode 3: The journey of the three pilot territories

This summer the Biocircularcities project is coming behind your screen with a series of three exclusive webinars.

Since 2021, three pilot territories have been working on unlocking the circular economy potential of unexploited bio-based waste streams (namely organic fraction of municipal solid waste in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, biowaste from the coffee chain in the metropolitan city of Naples, and residual biomass from forestry and related wood transformation activities in the province Pazardzhik). Thanks to the BBI-JU Biocircularcities project, they have developed new models to boost the circularity of these biowaste chains.

Do you want to know more about these new value chains? Are you eager to adopt the approach followed by the Biocircularcities pilots and spread a circular bioeconomy in your territory? The Biocircularcities Trilogy is for you! The Biocircularcities partners will tell you all about the project, its development, and findings in three webinars.

Time has come for the third and final episode.

Episode 3: The journey of the three pilot territories

The Biocircularcities project brought together three “pilot territories” aiming to improve a specific value-chain focusing on one key bioresidue. The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona in Spain has focused on incentivising quality and quantity of municipal bio-waste separately collected in its urban context, the Metropolitan City of Naples in Italy has tackled the conversion of coffee silverskin from the agrifood industry into high-fibres content bread, and the Province of Pazardzhik in Bulgaria has targeted its forestry residues to collect them for energy or biochemicals production through lignocellulosic valorisation.

Join this third and final webinar of the Biocircularcities Trilogy to follow the journey of the three pilot territories towards these new value-chains and get a taste of the experience they gained during the project. You will hear about a variety of topics, such as how local stakeholders were involved in the process, and how the scientific work of Biocircularcities partners supported the local discussions.

Biocircularcities Trilogy – Episode 2: Identifying the most promising biocircular technological options, the Biocircularcities Webtool in action

Biocircularcities Trilogy – Episode 2: Identifying the most promising biocircular technological options, the Biocircularcities Webtool in action

The Biocircularcities Trilogy is for you! The Biocircularcities partners will tell you all about the project, its development, and findings in three webinars.

While the episode 1 is already behind us, you can still register for episode 2!

Episode 2: Identifying the most promising biocircular technological options, the Biocircularcities Webtool in action

Do you need help to decide on relevant technological pathway(s) to increase the circularity of the biowaste stream you would like to valorise? Do you want to assess the socio-economic, political and environmental context of the territory where you will implement the biowaste chain according to a list of influential criteria? Here comes the Biocircularcities Webtool!

Developed by the Biocircularcities partners using both the analysis of the main drivers and barriers towards biocircular value chains for biomass waste management and the experience of the pilot areas, this tool will support the identification of the most suitable (bio-circular technologies) for improving the biowaste management and contribute to replicate the project’s findings in other territories.

With this second episode of the Biocircularcities Trilogy you will dive into the Biocircularcities Webtool, discover its specificity, learn how to use it and what you can achieve with it.
