The role of bio-based industry for a healthy planet in the post-covid era

In the context of Ecomondo – The Green Technology Expo, next October 29th from 10.00 to 12.30 CET, the Ecomondo Scientific Technical Committee and Cluster SPRING will held the conference (language: Italian) “The role of bio-based industry for a healthy planet in the post-covid era“.

As reported by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) in 2020, pandemics will emerge more often in the future, unless we change the global approach of those human activities that have a huge impact on ecosystems.

In this context, the bio-based industry can represent an essential element to ensure the green transition envisaged by the Green Deal, reconciling the economy with social, environmental and human health. The different production sectors constituting the bioindustry play a key role in the creation of local low-impact supply chains, in which waste represents the lifeblood for the production of new sustainable materials, products and services. The evolution of this sector towards a growing circularity and towards a greater integration of industry, agriculture and urban centers will be fundamental to address the multiple interconnected challenges of the twenty-first century, mitigating the impact of climate change, regenerating degraded soils and ensuring competitiveness and the creation of new jobs.

The conference aims to present some case studies of circular bioeconomy, which have made Italy a pioneer in this sector at European level and to bring out the obstacles that still remain for a full implementation of the circular bioeconomy.

Virginia Puzzolo, Head of Programme of Bio-based Industry Joint Undertaking (BBI) will explain the role of Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking and the future Circular Bio-Based Joint Undertaking as catalysts for the green transition.

Susanna Albertini, from FVA New Media Research, representing the EuBioNet, will highlight how to promote the biotransition through communication, education and stakeholder engagement.
