IMPLEMENTATION ACTION PLAN (2020-2025) FOR THE ITALIAN BIOECONOMY STRATEGY BIT II

IMPLEMENTATION ACTION PLAN (2020-2025) FOR THE ITALIAN BIOECONOMY STRATEGY BIT II

The National Bioeconomy Coordination Group (NBCG) of the Presidency of Council of Ministers (active in the frame of the National Committee Biosecurity, Biotechnology and Life Sciences of the same Presidency, involving representatives of 4 Ministries and of all Regions and Provinces, the National Agency for Cohesion and the main relevant National Technology Clusters (public private partnerships), who developed BIT II (Bioeconomy in Italy), prepared the present Implementation Action Plan (IAP). The IAP is addressed to translate some emerging BIT II priorities into distinct actions and related monitoring, to ensure an operational roll-out of the Italian Bioeconomy potential across Italy in the next 5 years. It is consistent with the other national strategies relating to the production of bioresources, their mobilization and use within the ecological limits. The NBCG will facilitate the actions and yearly monitor the IAP adoption. NBCG will also closely interact with the coordinators of the Bioeconomy strategies active in the other EU Member States to promote common positions in the review of the IAP of the EU strategy on the Bioeconomy launched on 2018. This will facilitate the exchange of best implementation actions and practices, enhance inter-country cooperation and joint activities, promote the overall implementation of the Bioeconomy strategiesin all EU Countries and the shaping of a concrete agenda of joint actions and recommendations, aiming at strengthening the development of the Bioeconomy in the EU as a whole. This will also facilitate the alignment of Italian priorities with those of the Water framework directive, the “biodiversity” and “farm to fork” strategies, part of the EU Green Deal, and the ones of the cluster 6 of Horizon Europe “Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment”, and its related Missions and Partnerships.
The proposed document after presenting the national context with particular reference to the role of Bioeconomy in Italy in coherence with the recently revised national Bioeconomy Strategy (BITII), describes:

  • how circular Bioeconomy model can be valued in this particular critical period from the
    health and socio-economic point of view and its key role in the Post-COVID 19 phase;
  • a detailed action plan 2020-2025 including a series of relevant targeted actions which have
    been clustered into 4 main macro areas (policy/standards, pilot actions, regeneration of
    ecosystem services and stakeholders engagement);
  • flagship projects ready for deployment at national levels are presented in order to provide concrete examples of Bioeconomy investments which can act as catalyst of socio-economic growth;
  • legislative and proposals for their overcoming is described. A plan for dissemination and monitoring of IAP results is included in the document as well.The full document is available at:  http://cnbbsv.palazzochigi.it/media/1959/bitii_implementationactionplan_cnbbsv_watermark-logged.pdf

Fill the Biobridges survey on consumers’ awareness on bio-based products

Fill the Biobridges survey on consumers’ awareness on bio-based products

How much do you know about bio-based products? What are your opinions, concerns and purchase habits about them? What is your point of view as a consumer?

Have your say and help us to increase the dialogue with brand owners and bio-based industries!

Biobridges believes that consumers’ opinion is essential in shaping and developing the future of the bioeconomy sector, as well as the market uptake of bio-based products. Moreover, starting from consumers’ perspective is essential to reinforce the collaboration with bio-based industries and brands, overcoming the obstacles that hinder their collaboration.

Because of this, Biobridges launched a survey aimed to assess consumers’ awareness about bio-based products and to understand their purchase habits.

The survey is available in 9 different languages (English, Croatian, Estonian, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Slovak, Spanish) and asks people to reply as a consumer, having in mind the choices made in their every-day lives.

The questionnaire – it will take you only 10 minutes! – is a fundamental key to express your opinion and to discover more on bio-based products. Your opinion will help us to design recommendations and activities for boosting the dialogue between consumers and companies and foster the bio-based products market uptake. The recommendations designed thanks to your contributions will be presented to the European Commission and to Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking.

New BBI JU project: Glaukos, the innovative bio-based response to ocean plastic pollution

New BBI JU project: Glaukos, the innovative bio-based response to ocean plastic pollution

The European Commission and the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking invest 4,1 M€ in a project to drastically diminish ocean plastic pollution. Glaukos a four-year European project that will develop biodegradable and biorecyclable textile fibres and coatings to be used in fishing gear and clothing, kicked off this month. This European research project brings together a prestigious partnership of 14 partners from 9 European countries and is financed with over 4.1 million euro from the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), a public-private partnership between the European Commission (Horizon 2020 programme) and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC).Abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) accounts for about 27% of all marine litter found in European oceans, the equivalent of 11.000 tons ALDFG entering the marine environment each year. Evidence has been mounting that the synthetic fibres which make up much of our clothing and fishing gear, are also a major source of textile-related microplastic pollution in marine environments. Clothes simply wear off during use and in particular during washing. It was found that in a typical wash, up to 700.000 microparticles can be released. Glaukos aims to develop innovative textile fibres and textile coatings that are adapted to the 21st century needs: they reconcile excellent technical performance with a low environmental impact. The focus of the project lies exactly on the two abovementioned ocean polluters: fishing gear and clothing.

The Glaukos project will redesign the complete life cycle of these textiles. As key concept in polymer design to mitigate pollution caused by fibre fragments, the project will build upon triggerable biodegradability to increase the degradation rate of the (micro)plastics. from Glaukos materials compared to conventional (micro)plastics. In parallel, a bio-recycling process will be developed to incentivise collection of the textiles at the end of their life, thereby further reducing pollution. In addition, the supply chain distance will be substantially reduced by scaling up a disruptive fermentation process for value-adding polymer building blocks from several European bio-based feedstocks. This will increase the biobased content of the Glaukos textile products. Glaukos will also develop eco-friendly fishing gear coatings withincreased biobased content and reconcile the product characteristics described above with technical performance and durability, to ensure the effective and long-term use of textile products such as fishing gear and clothing and to significantly reduce their carbon and plastic footprint.

Stakeholder Labs will be set up to involve end-users as well as brands from the clothing and fishing gear industry and consumer awareness will be raised via e.g. influencer marketing. New Life Cycle Assessment methods will be developed to better assess the plastic footprint of textile value chains. Finally, integrated methods to assess the biodegradability and ecotoxicity of microplastics in marine environments will be developed and their standardization initiated.

Zsófia Kádár, Glaukos Project Coordinator says: “We are looking forward to tackling one of the biggest problems our society is facing with ocean pollution. According to the latest studies marine microplastic concentration have been vastly underestimated. Plastic leakage can only be truly mitigated if polymers are developed that are prone to recycling and biodegrade rapidly and completely.Glaukos’ ambition is to pave the way for this transition. We have all the partners
to succeed.”

1st Webinar on Sustainability | Making the Transition to a Circular Bioeconomy Sustainable and Inclusive

1st Webinar on Sustainability | Making the Transition to a Circular Bioeconomy Sustainable and Inclusive

Among the 114 definitions of the circular economy proposed (Kirchherr, Reike and Hekkert, 2017), it can be stated that the circular economy—defined “as a regenerative system in which resource input and waste, emission, and energy leakage are minimised by slowing, closing, and narrowing material and energy loops” (Geissdoerferp et al. 2017, p. 759)—has been enriched by the contribution of the bioeconomy sector, given that a sustainable bioeconomy represents the renewable “segment” of the circular economy (EC 2018).

But how circular is the bioeconomy? And how pervasive it is among small and medium firms? What are the challenges and opportunities associated with a transition to a circular bioeconomy in the post COVID-19 era?

These and more will be discussed during the webinar.

First Belgian BISC-E [Biobased Innovation Student Challenge Europe]

First Belgian BISC-E [Biobased Innovation Student Challenge Europe]

Corona does not stop the student competition BISC-E. On the contrary, the crisis gives students extra time to work on their biobased product or process. TKI-BBE organizes a digital kick-off meeting on Wednesday 15 April at 3:00 PM.

For the first time ever a national Belgian competition of the Biobased Innovation Student Challenge Europe (BISC-E) will be organized in 2020.

Do you want to design a creative bio-based solution as a multidisciplinary student team? The Bio-based Innovation Student Challenge Europe (BISC-E), organized by GREEN-CHEM and RE-SOURCE.bio, encourages students to explore innovation and business development in the emerging bioeconomy while developing a new biobased product or process. Are you up for the challenge? Register now!

The Challenge

All teams develop a bio-based innovation (product or process) and present their ideas via a participation file and a presentation to a jury of experts from industry and science. The presentation has to be accompanied by a few supporting documents explaining sustainability, technical feasibility and economic viability of your innovation.

The jury will assess these teams via an online preselection. The 3 best teams will be selected for the Belgian finals. Teams who continue through to the finals will have to submit a complete dossier. This dossier consists of the original participation file and presentation, as well as an updated version of the participation file and presentation based on the feedback of the jury that was given during the preselection and bsed on the coaching over the summer. In addition, the group needs to explain their progress and decision making in an extra explanatory letter to the jury.

All rules can be found in this document.

For Who?

The challenge is open for all BSc and MSc students. Due to the multidisciplinary character of the challenge it is recommended to embody multiple disciplines in your team, of which exact science should be one. Team members can come from different institutions.

Everybody wins
