Ecomondo, the leading event in Europe for the new models of circular economy

For the Circular Bioeconomy, large Italian enterprises in the world vanguard in the sector of biodegradable and compostable bioplastics have been key players at Ecomondo for some time.

There is an appointment on Tuesday 5th November (2:30 pm Industria Biobased Room . Hall D3), entitled Smart and innovative solutions to reduce packaging waste: a first assessment of the REINWASTE project, organized by the Ecomondo Scientific Technical Committee, Confagricoltura, Federalimentare, ART-ER. REINWASTE, with the motto ´Preventing waste disposal is more sustainable and less expensive´, aims at developing sustainable (and economically advantageous) techniques for reducing the inorganic waste component such as packaging and similar materials, favouring the adoption of innovative ecological concepts on behalf of the agri-food industry and SMEs. The innovative aspect of REINWASTE is the involvement of the agricultural chain´s players and the agri-food sector´s industrial chain. For Italy, the project will concentrate on the companies of the Emilia-Romagna region of the dairy produce sector and the clusters in question will have to assess their feasibility. In the workshop, the first results obtained from the 30 companies to test the feasibility of measures aimed at preventing or recovering waste from packaging or similar materials. The meeting is chaired by Maurizio Notarfonso of Federalimentare Servizi and Daniela Sani of ART-ER.

On Wednesday 6th, at 10:00 am in Ravezzi Room 2, the program features From the commodities to the specialties: the crops in the era of climate change and the challenges for a circular, productive, sustainable, precise bioeconomy aimed at delivering high quality food and nutraceutical products, organized by the Ecomondo Technical Scientific Committee, Federazione Italiana Industria Alimentare e Bevande (Federalimentare), Confederazione Generale dell´Agricoltura Italiana (Confagricoltura), Cluster Agrifood CL.A.N.
In Italy, crops cover approximately seven million hectares, over 50% of the country´s 12.6 million hectares. They are therefore a very important element for managing the land and the agri-ecosystem. From the point of view of the market, these products are put on the international markets of ´undifferentiated commodities´ traded on a large scale. These markets often do not reward product qualification.
The recent trajectories of the bioeconomy, the circular economy and in general of the search for a sustainable intensification of agricultural productions represent a great opportunity for ´large crop´ products that, from cereals through proteoleagins to legumes, can become ´specialties´ with features in line with the needs (even new) of consumers and of the market of high quality food products which would also be able to respond to the new needs of wellness and health. The event will be chaired by Donato Rotundo of Confagricoltura, Maurizio Notarfonso of Federalimentare and Massimo Iannetta of ENEA

European research and innovation for the implementation of circular economy and bioeconomy is the title of the beacon event organized in collaboration with the OCSE and the European Commission, on Friday 8th November (at 10:00 am) and at which participations will include OCSE representative James Philps and the members of the Ecomondo Scientific Committee Francesco Fatone (Marches Polytechnic) and Mauro Majone (La Sapienza University).

BBI JU launched today the BBI JU Synergy Label, a new pilot initiative aiming to recognise the value and excellence of Demonstration Action and Flagship proposals submitted to the BBI JU Call for proposals that scored above the quality threshold but did not receive funding due to budget limits.

The twelve awarded proposals – namely SUPROV, NUTRIBANK, BIOBESTcide, ALINA, D-rAinBOW, HEALTHnALGAE, STARSHIP, Nut-WAVE, BIO-Prosseed, ProtiFinery, Bio-Beetchem and TAN-UP – received their certification during a dedicated session held in the context of the Research & Innovation Days (R&I Days) event organised by the European Commission in Brussels.

The BBI JU Synergy Label is awarded to BBI JU proposals that were deemed to be of high quality but did not receive funding due to budget limits. This certificate should enhance the recognition of the organisations participating in the proposals and facilitate the search by the consortia for alternative source of funding provided by EU organisations, EU Member States and regions or other possible funding organisations. The first BBI Synergy Label awardees are all the Demonstration Action and Flagship proposals included in the reserve list of BBI JU Call 2018.

In order to ensure that the recognition of the proposals awarded with the BBI Synergy Label is fully maximised, BBI JU aims at working with different funding organisations. The first example of this effort was showcased today during the dedicated R&I Days session, where BBI JU and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of maximising the opportunities of taking up investments in the bioeconomy sector. The MoU will apply in those economies where both organisations have a legal mandate to operate.

In the framework of this joint collaboration, the EBRD will be able to review those proposals that meet the screening requirements but do not get access to BBI JU funding, in order to assess the feasibility of their development in conjunction with EBRD financing. Furthermore, on a proposal-by-proposal basis and provided that certain requirements are met, the EBRD will analyse the possibility of proposals to access specific EBRD programmes such as those supporting small and medium businesses and/or higher-risk investments. Additionally, as EBRD has a strong focus on several EU-13 countries, this represents a strategic opportunity to ensure that investments in those countries are taken up more quickly.
