Transition towards blue and green economies in the Mediterranean

Transition towards blue and green economies in the Mediterranean

Transition towards blue and green economies in the Mediterranean” marks Interreg Med Blue and Green Growth Communities’ three years anniversary, representing the end of their first implementation period and bridging to the upcoming one. After three years of reflections, technical analyses and pilots, multiple events and links with external key actors, both communities from Interreg Med’s innovation axis join forces to reflect on key common issues and spaces for more collaboration towards innovative sustainable growth in the Mediterranean.

During its first day, addressing the role of territorial cooperation for sustainable development, as well as business innovation, access to finance, education to sustainability, and policy-making for bluer and greener economies, this event aims to reflect on regional smart specialization strategies and on how sustainability is fostered though Mediterranean clusters. It is open to a wide variety of participants and will involve key stakeholders from the European Institutions, the private and finance sectors, the academia, NGOs and thematic community projects for a common dialogue.

During its second day, both communities present the opportunity to address inherent issues in a more sectoral way link to the blue economy on the one hand, and to the green economy on the other.

All conclusions from the discussions will be transferred to the whole of the communities in view of their respective next implementation phases, as to other stakeholders through events such as the Research & Innovation Days organized the following week, or the EU Open Days.

The economy of the sea: valorisation of marine resources. Balance between environmental protection and economic and social development needs.

The economy of the sea: valorisation of marine resources. Balance between environmental protection and economic and social development needs.

The sea represents for the Italian territory a great opportunity for growth and economic and social development through the enhancement of the marine ecosystem. The balance between environmental protection and the needs of economic and social development are essential for a sustainable development.

In the context of the Mini Maker Faire, BIOVOICES in collaboration with Biobridges and MISTRAL projects organized a regional MML workshop entitled “The economy of the sea: valorisation of marine resources. Balance between environmental protection and economic and social development needs.”

The Mini Maker Faire is an initiative organized by Maker Faire Rome and Lazio Innova. A cycle of 7 free training and in-depth meetings dedicated to makers, companies and aspiring entrepreneurs, to develop technological skills.

Thursday 26 September from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, a Mini Maker Faire on the economy of the sea will be held at the Spazio Attivo of Latina.

In the first part of the day the speakers of the most important realities, including Marevivo, CNR, Legambiente Terracina, Biobridges and BIOVOICES projects will share their good practices, research, ideas, projects and solutions by presenting an overview of the policies, strategies, action plans, technological infrastructures and financial instruments. In the second part of the day, through the testimonies of speakers of the most important realities protagonists of best practices including Enea, SEADS and Mermazing, we will talk about biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, enhancement and promotion of marine protected areas, fight against pollution and to illegal fishing and environmental education to finally address, through the involvement of all the participants, challenges, opportunities and barriers to promote territorial development.

Science is Wonderful! 2019

Science is Wonderful! 2019

Science is Wonderful! is a free exhibition which brings the world of science to the public. Fighting cancer, slowing down global warming, preventing hunger and drought, facilitating human life in space… it is all part of the variety of activities schools, families and young people can discover at the event.

Through hands-on experiments, live demonstrations, face-to-face chats with researchers, Science is Wonderful! shows how science impacts our daily lives. More than 5,000 people took part in the ‘Science is Wonderful!’ event in Brussels in 2018.

This year, the European Commission organises Science is Wonderful! together with the first edition of the European Research and Innovation Days (EU R&I Days) which will take place from 24 to 26 September in KANAL – Centre Pompidou, also in Brussels.

The EU R&I Days will bring together world leaders to debate and shape the future of research and innovation. Co-creation and engagement with stakeholders will be the main topic of the first European R&I Days. The aim of this event is to help build the strategic priorities for the first four years of the implementation of Horizon Europe (2021-2027), the EU’s next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.

Some of the European Bioeconomy Network partners, including BIOVOICES, Biobridges, BIOWAYS, BioCannDo and LIFT projects, will share at their stands presentations, activities and games.

Choosing the right biomass feedstock strategy (webinar)

Choosing the right biomass feedstock strategy (webinar)

For any bio-based project, identifying the right feedstock strategy is a key aspect. One of the first steps to make the project viable is to secure a continuous and long-term supply of biomass. This ensures the plant runs efficiently and does not experience interruptions.

But biomass availability is complex to estimate. It is necessary to assess which feedstock is available close by to avoid high transport costs. The feedstock must also have sufficient quality and specific characteristics to meet the technical requirements of the plant. The cost and sustainability of the chosen biomass are equally crucial.

This webinar will explore all these key aspects drawing from the long-standing experience of three experts in biomass feedstocks. To join the webinar please register at this link. Registered participants will receive by email a link to join the webinar 1-2 hours before the scheduled start time.

The webinar is the first in a series called ‘From biomass to bio-based products’. Subsequent webinars will focus on: Developing a pyrolysis-based biorefinery (November), Making products out of lignin and sugars (January), Ensuring sustainability (March).

SPEAKERS

Sonja Germer, Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB)

Innovations in lignocellulosic biomass production: effects on costs, sustainability and acceptance

Lars Wietschel, University of Augsburg

Agroforestry residue potentials in the European Union: current status and future perspectives

Bart Tambuyser, CAPAX Biobased Development

Virtual pyrolysis plant locations: availability and quality of biomass

Chair: Bert Van de Beld, BTG Biomass Technology Group

THE BIO4PRODUCTS PROJECT

This webinar is being organised as part of the Bio4Products project, which is testing the feasibility of a fast pyrolysis based biorefinery concept. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 723070.

In the food and packaging supply chain? Tell us thoughts on using bio-based products.

EU-funded Agrimax project, are developing and demonstrating the production of multiple, high-value products from crop and food-processing waste to tackle the millions of tonnes of food wasted every year.

Food ingredients and packaging additives can be extracted from by-products and unavoidable wastes for the agrifood production chain. If you are in this supply chain, we would like to find out your thoughts on using such compounds. The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete (all answers are anonymous).

Take the survey. (open until the 30th June 2019.)
