The European Commission – DG RTD – Unit B2 “Bioeconomy and food systems” will organize a virtual bioeconomy stakeholder workshop that will take place on 28/10/2021 from 14:00 to 17:00 CET.

This virtual workshop will aim at discussing the input received during the public consultation but also at collecting complementary views.

CONTEXT

In November 2019, the Council of the European Union adopted conclusions on the 2018 updated Bioeconomy strategy and called for the delivery of a progress report by 2022.

The progress report,entitled “European Bioeconomy Policy: Stocktaking and future developments”, will assess the implementation of the 14 actions under the 2018 Bioeconomy strategy and will present preliminary results. lt will also explain how the bioeconomy policy is contributing to the objectives under the Green Deal and explore possible next steps that can reinforce the potentials of the Bioeconomy policy for a sustainable and climate neutral society.

As stakeholders, you have a key role to play and in this process and that is why a public consultation was published online between 12/07/ 2021 and 31/08/ 2021 to gather various feedbacks and points of views. A summary of the feedback analysis will be published online in the coming days.

Open Innovation Test Beds (OITBs) are key elements in accelerating the green and digital transition, increasing European competitive and technological leadership, supporting the move to climate-neutrality and circularity, and accelerating industrial innovation.

These Test Beds aim to bring nanotechnologies and advanced materials within market reach by providing access to demonstration and upscaling facilities, as well as services to advance technologies from laboratory validation to prototypes in industrial environments.

This online workshop will bring together OITBs, SMEs, industry associations, clusters, universities, and research centres. Our goal is to build awareness on the OITB services for customers and SMEs which will bring their own ideas and materials to be scaled up by the Test Beds.

Open Innovation Test Beds are gathering all the relevant players while providing all relevant services needed for innovation based on new materials, therefore reducing technological risks and accelerating market access.

Join us to discover practical solutions and opportunities provided by four OITBs, funded under the Horizon 2020 programme, for key sectors such as packaging, automotive, energy, construction, food, and consumer goods.

A two-day experience exchange and networking event of the BalticBiomass4Value project is hosted by 3N Lower Saxony Network for Renewable Resources and Bioeconomy (Germany), Vidzeme Planning Region (Latvia) and Halmstad University (Sweden). The event is aimed at local authorities and municipal enterprises who have an interest in bio-based waste management.

Event Overview

Day 1:

The first day is aimed at municipal and state-owned companies relevant for the value chain selected (bio-waste management and utilisation), RTD and innovation institutions, business development and/or technology transfer services.

Day 2:

The second day is aimed at regional policy and decision makers: local authorities and administrations, regional development agencies, regional governments and ministries, other regional decision makers.

PRESERVE, UPLIFT, and upPE-T are organising an online joint workshop: Upcycling bio-plastic of food & drink packaging, to be held on 20 October 2021. The three initiatives are EU-funded projects under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. During the session, they will present their work to transform food and drink packaging into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value, ensuring that micro-plastics are avoided.

Regional Bioeconomy Investment Forum

The first edition of the Regional Bioeconomy Investment Forum was inaugurated on September 14th and 15th, organized by Consorzio Italbiotec in collaboration with the Lombardy Green Chemistry Association in the context of the MPowerBIO project and the Towards Green Transition Facility.

The initiative represented an opportunity for ten of the most innovative Italian biotechnology companies to pitch their sustainable business models in front of investors, financial consultants, and venture capitals.
Our congratulations to the three winning companies:

  • Vegea, producer of organic, cruelty-free fabrics obtained from grape marc;
  • Packtin, start-up that converts waste from the food supply chain into biodegradable supplements, gels and coatings;
  • Rewow, which gives new life to exhausted food oil to produce biopolymers.

Online Workshop: Promoting the biotransition through communication, education and stakeholders engagement

Next October 21st from 11:00am to 1:00pm, Transition2Bio partners APRE and FVA are organizing, in the context of the sustainability week “Festival dello sviluppo sostenibile 2021” lead by ASviS the online workshop “Promoting the biotransition through communication, education and stakeholders engagement“.

Workshop objectives

The workshop (Language: italian) is addressed to regional actors (public administrations, clusters, innovation agencies, etc.) to strengthen their skills to communicate, educate and involve stakeholders in the implementation of bioeconomy strategies. Through the knowledge of good practices already implemented in some Italian regions, the workshop aims to present and deepen paths that can be started in your region to raise awareness of companies, primary producers, training and education institutions, citizens on new production activities, more sustainable consumption and lifestyles, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the new Green Deal.

In particular, Goals 9 (Businesses, innovation and infrastructures) and 12 (Sustainable cities and communities) will be central in the discussion of new lifestyles and consumption that can contribute to the achievement of Goal 13 (Fight against climate change), showing how solutions deriving from the bioeconomy are essential to tackle and halt climate change.

The workshop is divided into two sessions: the first will show, through the stories of some representatives of regional actors, the good practices already implemented in different contexts. The second session will present some tools and methodologies developed by the European project Transition2Bio and the European bioeconomy network – EuBioNet initiative that regional actors will be able to reuse in their territories to promote the bioeconomy.

BIObec: leveraging education to unlock the EU bioeconomy’s full potential

  • BIObec is bringing together 19 partners from 12 different countries that will work for 30 months and build bridges between the bio-based industry and the education system.
  • The project proposes a concept that merges the traditional idea of an education centre with that of a knowledge hub: the Bio-Based Education Centres (BBECs).

Madrid (Spain), 14 September 2021. – BIObec, a new project leveraging education to unlock the full potential of the European Union’s bioeconomy, officially kicked off with the celebration of an online meeting today, 14 September 2021.

The increasing importance of the bioeconomy, a sector in full growth, encompasses a great potential for economic development and the creation of new jobs. However, it also generates a demand for a qualified workforce with new skills and professional competencies.  BIObec aims to maximise the opportunities offered by the bioeconomy by interlinking universities, innovation labs, and R&D centres with industrial actors and regions to avoid skills and competencies gaps.

In order to achieve this, the project is bringing together 19 partners from 12 different countries that will work for 30 months and build bridges between the bio-based industry and the education system.

BIObec proposes a concept that merges the traditional idea of an education centre – such as a university or a vocational education and training centre – with that of a knowledge hub: the Bio-Based Education Centres (BBECs), which will act as multi-level knowledge hubs bridging the gaps between academic institutions, students, innovation entities and policymakers.

“We are very glad to coordinate a project proposing a collaborative perspective for the development of new skills and educational approaches”, said Davide Viaggi, Professor and Researcher at University of Bologna and BIObec’s Project Coordinator. “By developing the concept of the Bio-Based Education Centres, we expect to align the bio-based industry needs for skills and competencies, with the workforce potential through consistent interactions between all the relevant stakeholders.”

BIObec aims to set the basis for the development of BBECs in six different European regions to answer the needs of the bio-based industry at local, regional, and national levels. These BBECs are expected to ensure a wide geographical coverage in Europe and address a wide range of topics linked to the variety of value chains and the different institutional contexts, paving the way for replication in other regions.

The bioeconomy: a sector in full growth

The bioeconomy comprises the production of renewable biological resources from land and sea, like crops, forests, fish, animals, and micro-organisms and their conversion into food, materials, energy, and related goods. Europe’s shift to a low carbon economy is stimulating the bioeconomy’s growth, and it is estimated that this emerging sector could create a million new jobs by 2030, especially in rural and coastal areas. However, these jobs would need to be filled by a specialised and qualified workforce, and thus, there is a growing demand for new education programmes that can deliver the needed skills and competencies. It is against this background that BIObec has been funded with the aim to bridge the gap between the industry needs and the educational offer.

BIObec is coordinated by the University of Bologna and formed by a multi-disciplinary consortium including:

  • 11 educational institutions: the Universities of Bologna, Hohenheim, Eastern Finland, Autonomous of Barcelona, Wageningen, Trakia, Munster Technological, Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, and the National Institute Of Technology For Life, Food And Environmental Sciences – AgroParisTech, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, and the Educational Research Institute (IBE).
    •     A national research body: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.
  • Three industrial clusters from the bio-based industry: Technological Corporation of Andalusia (CTA), Food and Cluster Bio Denmark, and Irish Bioeconomy Foundation.
  • Two SMEs with large experience in dissemination and communication in the bioeconomy: FVA and Sustainable Innovations.
  • A non-profit organisation integrating business and academia: Foundation for Education and Social Dialogue Pro Civis.
  • And a private research institute: Research Institute for Fodder Crops, Ltd. Troubsko.
