Bioeconomy in Friuli Venezia Giulia – Focus on training and orientation to support sustainable and circular development

Bioeconomy in Friuli Venezia Giulia – Focus on training and orientation to support sustainable and circular development

Description: ENHANCE LOCAL BIOECONOMY STRATEGIES AND ACTION PLANS

Bioeconomy in Friuli Venezia Giulia – Focus on training and orientation to support sustainable and circular development

The Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia organized an important event targeted at representatives of public administrations, research, the productive sector, civil society, school, training, and the university to jointly analyze the theme of training within a strategic sector at European level, such as the Bioeconomy.

This sector involves economic activities that use renewable bio-resources of soil and sea (agricultural crops, forests, animals and micro-organisms on land and sea) to produce food, materials and energy. Valuing the innovative manufacturing vocation, the presence of an excellent educational and scientific offer and the consequent ability to produce qualified human capital, the Regional Administration has identified the Bioeconomy as a potential opportunity for economic development in Friuli Venezia Giulia and in this context the training is of strategic importance.

During the event, the following topics will be examined with the participants:

  • How to sensitize the productive world and anticipate the training needs related to the opportunities of the Bioeconomy;
  • How to train the trainers;
  • How to guide young people, families and teachers / trainers. At the work there will also be experts at national level, who will illustrate some good practices.

Participation in the morning event is addressed to experts by invitation, to participate in the afternoon session it is necessary to register via the following link:

BBI JU Stakeholder Forum CSAs workshop

BBI JU Stakeholder Forum CSAs workshop

Egg Congress and Meeting Center                                                                                           Brussel 3 December

The role of Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) is fundamental in supporting bio-based industries grow and the market-uptake, because these projects tackle strategic aspects and cross-cutting challenges fundamental to boost the Bioeconomy. Despite of the considerable amount of high-quality knowledge generated by the CSAs in the different programmes, a global, integrated and structured vision of their results is missing. CSAs outputs are often not easily available, neither integrated among CSAs, nor transparent and promoted among the stakeholders. To create a coherent and stimulating ‘environment’ for a sustainable bio-based industry in Europe, better knowledge circulation and collaboration among CSAs, funded under different programmes should be encouraged to provide a global picture, maximise the impact of CSAs results and provide an integrated overview of gaps that should be addressed, providing evidence-based recommendations for the incoming calls.

To address the above-mentioned challenge, LIFT project contributes to maximise the impact of CSA by valorising their outcomes and promoting the collaboration among them, aiming at identifying gaps to be addressed to ensure a stimulating environment boosting the Bio-Based economy.

In the context of the BBI JU Stakeholder Forum 2019, LIFT project is organising, in close collaboration with BBI JU, a Mobilisation and Mutual Learning Workshop among the CSA projects, as well as selected non-CSA projects funded under different programmes, promoting the creation of an innovation ecosystem for the bioeconomy.

38 CSAs will present the lessons learnt from their projects and will discuss the challenges still to be addressed for bioeconomy uptake in 4 facilitated sessions, involving more that 350 participants.

The parallel sessions will address the following topics:

  • Communication and  education
  • Policy framework
  • From research to market
  • Value chains and innovation ecosystem

The workshop is supported by the European Bioeconomy Network, BIOVOICES and Biobridges projects

Bioeconomy and its trade-offs towards meeting the Paris Agreement and the SDGs

Bioeconomy and its trade-offs towards meeting the Paris Agreement and the SDGs

INSA Toulouse November 19, 2019

This 1-d scientific event is a spin-off of the first Advisory Board Meeting of the Make Our Planet Great Again Project Cambioscop. It aims to gather students, researchers, politicians as well as bioeconomy stakeholders around a collective discussion on the various societal issues at stake in a future where all carbon needs of societies are supplied without fossil resources, in an endeavor to reach carbon (and greenhouse gases) neutrality. The seminar will take a broad perspective over bioeconomy and gather World experts of sustainable agriculture intensification, land use changes, bio-based materials, life cycle assessment, bioenergy and biofuels, decarbonized energy systems, soil carbon storage and climate science, among others. The seminar aims to foster our understanding of the key criteria that should guide the development of bioeconomy (in France and elsewhere) in the future.  Some of the key questions to be discussed include:

  • Can we supply the carbon needs of society without fossil resources while remaining within planetary boundaries? What are the key trade-offs?
  • What are the current products and services supplied without fossil carbon, and what are the business models around those?
  • What indicator should be used to measure the performance of bioeconomy and how could the sustainable development goals be used to this end?
  • Towards carbon neutrality: what can we realistically expect from soils?
  • What should France absolutely consider in order to sustainably develop its bioeconomy business model?

THE BIOECONOMY – KEY PLAYER AT ECOMONDO

THE BIOECONOMY – KEY PLAYER AT ECOMONDO

Ecomondo, the leading event in Europe for the new models of circular economy

For the Circular Bioeconomy, large Italian enterprises in the world vanguard in the sector of biodegradable and compostable bioplastics have been key players at Ecomondo for some time.

There is an appointment on Tuesday 5th November (2:30 pm Industria Biobased Room . Hall D3), entitled Smart and innovative solutions to reduce packaging waste: a first assessment of the REINWASTE project, organized by the Ecomondo Scientific Technical Committee, Confagricoltura, Federalimentare, ART-ER. REINWASTE, with the motto ´Preventing waste disposal is more sustainable and less expensive´, aims at developing sustainable (and economically advantageous) techniques for reducing the inorganic waste component such as packaging and similar materials, favouring the adoption of innovative ecological concepts on behalf of the agri-food industry and SMEs. The innovative aspect of REINWASTE is the involvement of the agricultural chain´s players and the agri-food sector´s industrial chain. For Italy, the project will concentrate on the companies of the Emilia-Romagna region of the dairy produce sector and the clusters in question will have to assess their feasibility. In the workshop, the first results obtained from the 30 companies to test the feasibility of measures aimed at preventing or recovering waste from packaging or similar materials. The meeting is chaired by Maurizio Notarfonso of Federalimentare Servizi and Daniela Sani of ART-ER.

On Wednesday 6th, at 10:00 am in Ravezzi Room 2, the program features From the commodities to the specialties: the crops in the era of climate change and the challenges for a circular, productive, sustainable, precise bioeconomy aimed at delivering high quality food and nutraceutical products, organized by the Ecomondo Technical Scientific Committee, Federazione Italiana Industria Alimentare e Bevande (Federalimentare), Confederazione Generale dell´Agricoltura Italiana (Confagricoltura), Cluster Agrifood CL.A.N.
In Italy, crops cover approximately seven million hectares, over 50% of the country´s 12.6 million hectares. They are therefore a very important element for managing the land and the agri-ecosystem. From the point of view of the market, these products are put on the international markets of ´undifferentiated commodities´ traded on a large scale. These markets often do not reward product qualification.
The recent trajectories of the bioeconomy, the circular economy and in general of the search for a sustainable intensification of agricultural productions represent a great opportunity for ´large crop´ products that, from cereals through proteoleagins to legumes, can become ´specialties´ with features in line with the needs (even new) of consumers and of the market of high quality food products which would also be able to respond to the new needs of wellness and health. The event will be chaired by Donato Rotundo of Confagricoltura, Maurizio Notarfonso of Federalimentare and Massimo Iannetta of ENEA

European research and innovation for the implementation of circular economy and bioeconomy is the title of the beacon event organized in collaboration with the OCSE and the European Commission, on Friday 8th November (at 10:00 am) and at which participations will include OCSE representative James Philps and the members of the Ecomondo Scientific Committee Francesco Fatone (Marches Polytechnic) and Mauro Majone (La Sapienza University).

It is estimated that the bioeconomy generates a production value of 330 billion euros, over 10% of the GDP, with a workforce of two million. The bioeconomy, compared to business activities, rose from 8.8% in 2017 to 10.1% in 2018. (Source: Intesa San Paolo . Assobiotec)

NEW BBI JU SYNERGY LABEL RECOGNISES THE VALUE OF HIGH-QUALITY PROPOSALS

NEW BBI JU SYNERGY LABEL RECOGNISES THE VALUE OF HIGH-QUALITY PROPOSALS

BBI JU launched today the BBI JU Synergy Label, a new pilot initiative aiming to recognise the value and excellence of Demonstration Action and Flagship proposals submitted to the BBI JU Call for proposals that scored above the quality threshold but did not receive funding due to budget limits.

The twelve awarded proposals – namely SUPROV, NUTRIBANK, BIOBESTcide, ALINA, D-rAinBOW, HEALTHnALGAE, STARSHIP, Nut-WAVE, BIO-Prosseed, ProtiFinery, Bio-Beetchem and TAN-UP – received their certification during a dedicated session held in the context of the Research & Innovation Days (R&I Days) event organised by the European Commission in Brussels.

The BBI JU Synergy Label is awarded to BBI JU proposals that were deemed to be of high quality but did not receive funding due to budget limits. This certificate should enhance the recognition of the organisations participating in the proposals and facilitate the search by the consortia for alternative source of funding provided by EU organisations, EU Member States and regions or other possible funding organisations. The first BBI Synergy Label awardees are all the Demonstration Action and Flagship proposals included in the reserve list of BBI JU Call 2018.

In order to ensure that the recognition of the proposals awarded with the BBI Synergy Label is fully maximised, BBI JU aims at working with different funding organisations. The first example of this effort was showcased today during the dedicated R&I Days session, where BBI JU and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of maximising the opportunities of taking up investments in the bioeconomy sector. The MoU will apply in those economies where both organisations have a legal mandate to operate.

In the framework of this joint collaboration, the EBRD will be able to review those proposals that meet the screening requirements but do not get access to BBI JU funding, in order to assess the feasibility of their development in conjunction with EBRD financing. Furthermore, on a proposal-by-proposal basis and provided that certain requirements are met, the EBRD will analyse the possibility of proposals to access specific EBRD programmes such as those supporting small and medium businesses and/or higher-risk investments. Additionally, as EBRD has a strong focus on several EU-13 countries, this represents a strategic opportunity to ensure that investments in those countries are taken up more quickly.
